Learning transparent pre-clinical research

Project

Strategies, policies and intentions by scholar institutions are not enough to realize transparent quality biomedical and pre-clinial publications. 3Rupdate blended learning online and classroom tools were developed by SIS since 2015 and intend to help PhDs, post-docs, senior researchers, animal welfare officers, state veterinary members of FormA evaluation, and laboratory animal specialists to achieve these goals.

Context

Internet and Open Access (OA) are great opportunities to favor idea and constructive criticisms circulation amongst researchers. Swissuniversities signed for a new OA strategy in January 2017. The aim is total OA of publications financed or partially with public money until 2024. European H2020 project adopted the research data publication by default from 2017. SNSF that signed DORA Declaration in 2014 to work with quality indicators over quantitative bibliometric indicators to evaluate research. CRUS signed in 2013 for highest possible research quality using animals, and Federal Counsel announced in 2015 the building a future Swiss National 3Rs Competence Center for best possible pre-clinical research.

Transparency may be an opportunity for excellence and quality of biomedical and pre-clinical publications.

Animal experimentation has always been a hot political topic in Switzerland and Europe, and transparency may increase societal debates: Open Access (OA), Open Research Data (ORD) and Open Protocols of human research using animals may hurt or even shock the public. There is increasing awareness of a « science in crisis » (reproducibility and generalization problems), and usefulness of biomedical and pre-clinical research using animal is questioned. Post-reviewing platforms such as PubmedCommon and PubPeer are acting sometimes also as rumor amplifier. Scientific reputation and carriers are not built within academic circles anymore, numerical identity and traces make researchers reputation. This is why results obtained with animal experimentation should be of high quality, and it is not enough to tell it it is the case, or to be convinced of that.

Quality and scientific robustness should be demonstrated through careful reporting of experimental design, statistics, power calculation, models selection, replication, confirmatory studies, interests declaration in transparent open access documents peer-reviewed articles, open data, and open protocols. It should then legitimate scientific research and researchers reputation, and should show that no replacement to animal experimentation was of equal or of higher scientific value.

Strategies, policies and intentions by scholar institutions are not sufficien to realize transparent quality biomedical and pre-clinical publications. 3Rupdate blended learning online and classroom tools were developed by SIS since 2015 and intend to help PhDs, post-docs, senior researchers, animal welfare officers, state veterinary members of FormA evaluation, and laboratory animal specialists to achieve these goals.
